PASTA DOGMA

Pastafarianism is an ancient religion that spread worldwide after the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the supreme deity made of pasta, sauce, and meatballs, revealed its principles to the prophet Bobby Henderson in Kansas in 2005. This monotheistic religion is very tolerant, has no strict rules, and overcomes the rigidity of more widespread religions with a great deal of irony. For Instance, Pastafarians cannot eat penguin meat, they believe in an afterlife where a volcano will eternally erupt with fresh beer, and they will be surrounded by strippers. They justify the imperfections of the universe and mankind by saying that when the Flying Spaghetti Monster created them, it was unintentionally under the influence of a grand intoxication, and when it sobered up, it lost interest in what it had created. Despite the FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster) creating everything according to a “crazy design,” it left ten commandments to Pirate Mosey, two of which were lost, outlining how it would like humans to live. These are suggestions that start with “I’d prefer it if…” given to pirates, the chosen people but imperfect humans, so it’s accepted that it’s impossible to fully honor them; the important thing is to enjoy life while respecting others. Prayers are said whenever consuming al dente carbohydrates and beverages. Adherents dress as pirates because when they were more numerous in the past, global temperatures were lower, and they hope to contribute to reversing global warming. They use seafaring language and rename themselves with the “pastezzo” ceremony, choosing pseudonyms that combine nautical terms with food or drink names, such as Captain Barbasugo, Filibustiera of the Seven Moors, Mozzomanica Al Castoro, Nostromo Quentin Tarallino, and Black Squid Corsair. On their heads, they wear the typical tricorn pirate hat but also a colander, in honor of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. In several cases, they have successfully used their colander-clad photos on identity documents, just like the veils and turbans allowed in other religions. Italian Pastafarians were born in Rome in 2012 when they first gathered, and today they are organized into two closely collaborating entities: the Italian Pastafarian Church, established in 2014 as a religious entity, which, through the Pastefice Massimo or “Pappa”  organizes the “pannocchie” spread across Italy that usually meet for “beverdì,” sets the course for the faithful, and issues theological reflections along with the support of the concistory and the scardinals, and the Ciruma Pastafariana, known as CiuPa, which is the operational association that organizes convivial moments, raids in the world like the national annual gathering, as well as Halloween and New Year’s Eve events, the “Dioscotto” campaign which adheres to the international campaign “#endblasphemylaws” for the abolition of blasphemy laws worldwide, the “tagliatelle in piedi” as a disorderly, noisy, and unkempt way of protesting certain questionable political choices, and participates in demonstrations in defense of human rights, LGBTQIA+ people, and the defense of the traditional Pastafarian family, chaotic actions in defense of the marginalized, and supports the free choice of end-of-life decisions with the “Free to the Volcano” project. Those touched by the greasy appendages of the FSM believe that religion should be a private matter and that the State should be fully secular. However, as long as other religions enjoy privileged status, such as not paying property taxes on places of worship or having the right to 8×1000 (tax donations), Pastafarians will demand at least equal treatment. Therefore, the process of state recognition of the religious entity is underway, as has already occurred in Poland, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. The Pastafarian Church, although listed among parody religions, lacks none of the organs and rites that constitute religious credibility. Besides the celebration of the Pastezzo, ceremonies of “Pastrimonio” , formulas for receiving special “Pennedizioni”, catechism paths to become “Minestri di culto” , and even exorcisms have been regulated. During ceremonies, to express agreement and consent, “Ramen” resounds abundantly, while for speeches, greetings, and toasts, the word “Ahrrr!” is pronounced without interruption. Anyone who is “pastacurioso” and wishes to sail with intelligence and lightness through the Saucy Appendages of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is welcome, aware that, after all, the Pastafarian dogma is to have no dogmas at all.
